Timothy Molefe Modise was born in Pretoria and raised in Ga-rankuwa where he attended Agisanang Primary school and matriculated from Moruleng High School near Rustenburg in 1978. He was briefly a student at the Fort Hare University in 1980 but could not finish as the university was closed down then following student uprisings.
