THE WAY WE'RE WORKING
ISN'T WORKING
The defining ethic of the modern workplace is more, bigger, faster. We have more clients and customers to please, more emails to answer, more phone calls to return, more tasks to juggle, more meetings to attend, more places to go and more and more hours we feel we must work to avoid falling further behind.
We're so busy trying to keep up that we stop noticing that we're in a race that we can't win. All this furious activity exacts a series of silent costs: less capacity for focussed attention, less time for any given task and less opportunity to think reflectively and long term. More and more, paradoxically leads to less and less.
In this presentation, Helen will demonstrate that there is another way:
- Discover the myth of work/life balance. Juggling requires you to throw things up in the air, away from you. Old management theory says that the way to live a balanced life is to learn how to say no. The new world of work is about knowing what to say yes to and holding onto those moments!
- Understanding the power of stress and recovery to dramatically improve our energy levels.
- Gaining insight into building rituals. Will and discipline are wildly overrated. Our actions are largely determined by ritual.
- Exploring the perils of multi-tasking. We perform best when we're most singularly focused on a given task.
